Class #9

 Date: May 4th, 2024

During this class, I had the possibility to play Among us and learn more about this funny game. Also, we did a listening exercise because It´s the main skill for improve. Moreover, our teacher spoke about cumulative method, an exercise where you have to do the same every day. Due to that, cumulative method is a good option to study english, specially to improve the listening ability. Because of that, I have decided to talk about this method in the present blog.

The cumulative method, also known as the spaced repetition technique, is a powerful learning strategy that can be particularly effective for English language acquisition. This method, advocated by authors like Hermann Ebbinghaus and Piotr Wozniak, involves systematically reviewing and revisiting previously learned material at increasing intervals, thereby reinforcing memory and enhancing long-term retention.

Ebbinghaus, in his seminal work "Memory: A Contribution to Experimental Psychology," demonstrated the natural tendency of humans to forget information over time. He introduced the concept of the forgetting curve, illustrating the rapid decline in memory retention shortly after learning and the gradual stabilization of retention over time. This curve highlights the importance of spaced repetition in preventing forgetting and promoting long-term memory formation.

Wozniak, in his book "A Method of English Vocabulary Learning for Students of English Philology," further refined the cumulative method by incorporating spaced repetition schedules and nemonic techniques. He emphasized the significance of active recall, the process of retrieving information from memory without external cues, in strengthening neural connections and enhancing learning outcomes.

The cumulative method offers several advantages for English learners. By systematically revisiting previously learned material, learners can effectively combat forgetting and solidify their understanding of grammar rules, vocabulary, and pronunciation. Additionally, the method promotes active engagement with the language, encouraging learners to apply their knowledge in various contexts, such as reading, writing, speaking, and listening.

To effectively implement the cumulative method, learners can utilize various tools and techniques. Flashcards, spaced repetition software, and language learning apps can aid in organizing and scheduling review sessions. Additionally, incorporating mnemonic devices, such as associations, imagery, and acronyms, can enhance memory retention and make the learning process more engaging.

To close, the cumulative method stands as a valuable tool for English learners seeking to optimize their language acquisition journey. By incorporating spaced repetition and active recall strategies, learners can effectively combat forgetting, strengthen memory connections, and achieve long-term proficiency in the English language.
